Searching for Microorganisms in Nature - Special Report

Spanning 9.6 million square kilometers of China's vast land, there is a beautiful and magical place that boasts almost all of the country's most beautiful natural landscapes. It captivates those who have never set foot there and leaves a lasting impression on everyone who visits. This is the place that haunts people's dreams: the Inner Mongolia Grassland.

The vast grasslands of Inner Mongolia are teeming with breathtaking scenery—so much so that even three days and three nights would not suffice to describe it all. Today, however, our focus is not on the scenery but on the unique dietary culture of the grasslands. In the heart of the grasslands live the simple and kind-hearted Inner Mongolian herders, who have lived in harmony with their herds and the grasslands for generations. Probiotics, a precious gift from nature, play a vital role in their lives. Naturally fermented dairy products, which serve as the best carrier for probiotics, are an indispensable part of the herders' diet, accounting for more than half of their daily food intake.

NO1: Departure

To upgrade the Co-Symbiosis Source Beijing Probiotic Technology Research Center's Microbial Bank and explore the secrets behind the longevity and health of grassland ethnic groups across generations. On the morning of July 11, 2022, Mr. Wang Zhexin, Vice President of Symbiogen Group, Professor Liu Guiming from the Beijing Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and a team of eight others traveled to Inner Mongolia to collect samples of dairy products consumed by herders in their daily lives, as well as animal blood, feces, and soil. From a scientific perspective, they sought to identify the most suitable probiotics for the health of the Chinese population.

On July 27, 2022, Mr. Wang Zhexin, Vice President of Gongshengyuan Group, along with Professor Liu Guiming from the Beijing Academy of Agricultural Sciences and eight other colleagues, once again set foot on the fertile soil of Inner Mongolia to embark on a new phase of their fungal exploration journey. Our fungal exploration team traveled in two Toyota Land Cruisers, visiting multiple locations including Hohhot City, Ulanqab City, Siwangqi Banner, Bayin Aobao Sumu, Wugeta La, Alashan Left Banner, Bayannur Sumu, Alashan Right Banner, Alateng Aobao Town, and Hashha Sumu in Alashan Left Banner, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The journey covered over 5,200 kilometers, with 14 sampling sites visited, and a total of 76 samples collected.

The search team traveled through the Baoyin Aobao Sumu of Siwangqi, Ulanqab City, visiting herders' homes to collect samples of camel blood, camel yogurt, milk curds, milk tofu, milk, and milk skin. They visited Hu Rilei Bateer to collect fresh sheep's milk and samples.

The second stop of the took us to Bayannur Sum in Alashan Left Banner and Alashan Right Banner in Alashan League, where we collected samples of fermented mare's milk, camel milk, camel milk wine, goat yogurt, fresh milk, cow's milk cheese, and butter from local herders' homes. We also recorded the locations of the collection points, the fermentation times of the samples, and the production processes.

The third stop of the mushroom-hunting journey was Wulataxil Xilge in Alashan Left Banner, where sour milk and milk wine were collected, and camel yogurt and fresh milk were obtained in Hashi Hasu and Huduoge. On the way to the microbial strain collection sites in Hashhasu Mu'yi and Huduoge, the microbial search team encountered challenges such as vehicles getting stuck in the desert and poor mobile phone signals. In the evening, due to limited accommodation options, some team members stayed with local herders, while others had no choice but to sleep in the vehicles or even camp outdoors. Deep in the desert interior of Inner Mongolia, basic hygiene was also a major challenge. However, to meet the deadline and ensure the progress of the strain collection, everyone worked tirelessly, enduring harsh conditions, and ultimately overcame the difficulties, completing the mission ahead of schedule and to a high standard.

Delve into the secrets of the Tianshan Mountains and explore the mysteries of rare microorganisms in Xinjiang!

Xinjiang—where snow-capped mountains, grasslands, deserts, and oases coexist, giving rise to a unique microecological miracle. This region is not only a natural wonderland but also a natural treasure trove of probiotics: snowmelt nourishes the grasslands, desert temperature fluctuations temper life, and fertile oasis soils enrich the soil with nutrients. The bountiful gifts of millions of years of nature are now colliding with modern health concepts to spark new life energy.

From June 17 to 30, 2025, a team led by Mr. Wang Zhexin, head of the Beijing Gongshengyuan Probiotics Research and Development Center, and Professor Liu Guiming from the Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, embarked on a new phase of their probiotic search expedition in Xinjiang. This expedition focused on identifying high-quality probiotic resources in Xinjiang's unique ecological environment, with the aim of expanding Gongshengyuan Group's database of over 10,000 probiotic strains and providing scientific support for the development of probiotic products better suited to the Chinese population.

Our microbial exploration team set off from Urumqi, traversing the northern foothills of the Tianshan Mountains, crossing the vast grasslands of Altay, the felt-roofed dwellings of the Tarim Basin, and the fertile pastures of the Ili River Valley. We delved into the homes of nomadic herders to collect naturally fermented foods, traditional dairy products, and samples from unique environmental conditions. These biological specimens, originating from the heart of the Tianshan Mountains at an altitude of 3,000 meters and situated on the edge of a desert with a daily temperature difference of 40°C, have not only endured the harsh trials of extreme environments but also harbor the genetic code of microbial resilience.

Despite the vast and picturesque landscapes of Xinjiang, the mushroom-hunting expedition was fraught with challenges. Over 14 days and nights, traversing 8,000 kilometers through rain and wind, and crossing 12 counties and cities—our research team has traversed deserts and rugged mountains, enduring extreme temperature fluctuations and unpredictable weather conditions, and is on track to complete the collection of 70 precious biological and environmental samples. These samples will undergo rigorous testing in the laboratory, including gene sequencing and functional screening, to identify potential strains with both safety and efficacy, laying a solid scientific foundation for the future development of probiotic products.

Let us look forward to this journey across snow-capped mountains and deserts in search of beneficial bacteria, which will infuse Symbiogen Group's probiotic research with a unique "Xinjiang gene," harnessing the power of nature to protect gut health and usher in a new chapter of ecological and technological symbiosis.
